History

Given that they uniquely address the study of humans in society through time and their interaction with the planet, history and the humanities subjects more widely, provide distinctive contributions to pupils’ overall education. These subjects provide the knowledge, skills and dispositions for pupils to:

  • thrive through informed curiosity about the world;
  • view human challenges, quests and achievements through the lens of the long traditions that have shaped them;
  • gain the language and concepts to notice, question and challenge how power works in society, bringing about inequalities and suffering;
  • understand and value the diverse experiences and contributions of others who may be very different from themselves;
  • enrich their own sense of identity as they look across time, space and culture and see many positive versions of themselves;
  • understand the power of learned communities working collaboratively to seek truth in their claims about the world;
  • gain the concepts which give them the tools for precise thought and rigorous argument with which to describe, explain and change the world.

Our aim at Fordcombe Primary School is to encourage pupils to develop an appreciation and understanding of the past, evaluating a range of primary and secondary sources. Our historians will also be able to explain clearly how these sources give us an insight about how people around the world used to live and how these interpretations may differ.

In studying history as a discipline, pupils will:
  • use the concepts of continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity, difference and significance, in order to make connections, draw contrasts, analyse trends, frame historically-valid questions and create their own structured accounts, including written narratives and analyses
  • practise the methods of historical enquiry, understand how evidence is used rigorously to make historical claims, and discern how and why contrasting arguments and interpretations of the past have been constructed

Implementation

History is delivered through subject specific teaching organised into blocks. Meaningful links with other subjects are made to strengthen connections and understanding for pupils. The History units taught have been developed to help children appreciate their own identity and the challenges in their time. The curriculum aims to help pupils understand the process of change over time and significant developments.


All learning will start by revisiting prior knowledge. This will be scaffolded to support children to recall previous learning and make connections. Staff will model explicitly the subject-specific vocabulary, knowledge and skills relevant to the learning to allow them to integrate new knowledge into larger concepts.


Pre-teaching is used to teach key vocabulary, to support home learning and also as a part of daily review. Tier three subject specific vocabulary is displayed on the learning wall along with key facts and questions, and model exemplars of the work being taught.


Our historians will be given a variety of experiences both in and out of the classroom (where appropriate) to create memorable learning opportunities and to further support and develop their understanding.

Impact

At Fordcombe Primary School, pupils are confident and able to talk about what they have learnt in history using subject specific vocabulary. Pupils also demonstrate that they enjoy history and are able to recall their learning over time. Pupils work demonstrates that history is taught at an age appropriate standard across each year group with opportunities planned in for pupils to extend their knowledge. Work is of good quality and demonstrates pupils are acquiring knowledge, skills and vocabulary in an appropriate sequence.


History assessment is ongoing throughout the relevant cross-curricular themes to inform teachers with their planning lesson activities and adaptation. Our aim is that a summative assessment is completed at the end of each topic where history objectives have been covered; an objective tracker is used to inform leaders of school improvements or skills that need to be further enhanced.
